Dr. M. Khalilullah in his 48 years of medical career has made immense contribution to the country. When he was still a post doctoral fellow in the Department of Cardiology in the AIIMS, he had developed India's first indigenous cardiac pacemaker and equipment for cardiac monitoring; for which he received 2 National Awards from the Honorable President of India. He was Director-Professor & Head of Cardiology and Director of G.B. Pant Hospital, which finally became one of the most advanced centers for patient care, teaching and research in the field of cardiology. It was accepted and acclaimed the world over. His association with the G.B. Pant Hospital for a period of 25 years resulted in several break throughs, many new evolutions starting from Cardiac Pacemaker and advanced patient coronary care. He initiated the practice of electrophysiology in March 1975. This along with catheter Ablation which was again established in June 1984 for first time in the country, became widely accepted and practiced as super speciality all over the country. Advanced teaching programs resulted in more than 150 DM's and Non DM Resident Cardiologists, now grown into Senior Consultants, Professors and Head of departments in several institutions including AIIMS and all over the country. Infact the new generation of trained cardiologists came mainly for G.B. Pant Hospital and they in turn setup the Departments of Cardiology in the entire country for the practice, teaching, research in the field of heart disease.

In 1985, Dr. Khalilullah again introduced new concept of Intervention Cardiology, where treatment of heart disease can be done without surgery. This technique was based on balloon angioplasty, with use of laser probes, implantation of umbrella and devices; these techniques resulted in non surgical closure of intracardiac and extra cardiac defects ushering in a new era in the field of cardiology. Today these techniques have been established nationally and internationally and widely used to treat more than 60% of cardiac patients without surgery. This brought down the hospital stay of the patients from more than 10 days to just the day care or the at most 2-3 days. This increased the patient's turnovers several times and cutting down the cost of treatment apart from rapid recovery of patients to go back to their business and work saving millions of useful days added to the entire society.

He was Chairman of the Board of Research Studies in the faculty of medicine of Delhi University and carried out reforms and simplification of the selection process for the post graduate and post doctorate courses. He had been advisor to several States Governments of our country and has been a very popular examiner for post doctorate courses in cardiology all over the country and DNB Cardiology Examination run by the National Board of Examinations.
